Creating Special Moments for Robin
Over the past few years, Robin’s health has significantly been impacted by dementia. During this stage of life, it has been especially important for the team to work closely with Robin, to support his wishes and preferences and ensure he continues to experience joy, comfort and familiarity.
One thing that has always been very clear about Robin is his love of the seaside.
Robin has wonderful memories of beach holidays from earlier in his life. In particular, he often speaks fondly about trips to Barry Island and Weston-super-Mare, a place that brings back happy memories of time spent by the sea.
Because of Robin’s current health needs, a holiday needed careful planning. Working from a best interests perspective, the team explored how a trip to the seaside could still be possible while ensuring Robin’s comfort, dignity and safety.
Steph, our Director of People and Culture, worked closely with Robin and his care team to design a holiday that would feel right for him.
After researching accessible accommodation, Steph found a holiday home in Weston-super-Mare that had the adaptations Robin needed. The property provided the space and accessibility required to support Robin with his mobility aids, personal care and day-to-day living while he was away from home.
Importantly, the house also had enough room for Robin to share the experience with the people who matter most to him.
Sharing the Experience
Robin was able to bring his best friend, Cath, along for the trip, supported by two members of the care team.
Together, Robin and Cath helped plan the activities for their holiday. They chose simple, meaningful moments that reflected the things Robin enjoys most — visiting the beach, spending time by the sea, and enjoying traditional fish and chips on the promenade.
The focus of the trip was not a packed schedule, but creating space for Robin to enjoy familiar sights, sounds and experiences that bring him comfort and happiness.
Moments That Matter
For Robin, the holiday was about reconnecting with cherished memories and enjoying the seaside once again.
For Cath, it was the opportunity to spend special time together and create new memories alongside the ones they already share.
“My time with Robin was perfect, and far too short. The house was special, very handicap friendly, so safe. I wouldn’t mind going again. The staff were as always special, they knew what they were doing. Great company xxxxx”. Cath Thatcher, Robin’s best friend
