Celebrating World Down Syndrome Day

At Cocklebury Farmhouse, we are always looking for meaningful ways to celebrate the people who make our homes so special. This year, World Down Syndrome Day gave us a wonderful opportunity to do just that, by celebrating Jeffrey and everything he brings to our community.

Jeffrey has Down syndrome, and he is a much-valued and much-loved part of life in our home. World Down Syndrome Day was not only about raising awareness, but about recognising and celebrating Jeffrey as an individual, his personality, his presence, and the joy he brings to those around him.

To mark the occasion, we took part in the global Lots of Socks campaign. This initiative encourages people to wear bright, colourful and mismatched socks to celebrate difference and raise awareness of Down syndrome. The odd socks symbolise the uniqueness of the extra 21st chromosome that people with Down syndrome have. It is a simple but powerful way to start conversations and promote understanding.

In the lead-up to the day, we held housemates meetings where we talked together about what Down syndrome is, why World Down Syndrome Day matters, and how lucky we feel to know Jeffrey. These conversations were thoughtful, inclusive and reflective, giving everyone the opportunity to share their thoughts and learn together.

We also got creative, designing and decorating our own “odd socks” artwork, which we proudly displayed around the home. The decorations brought colour, energy and a real sense of celebration into the environment, making the day feel special for everyone involved.

Jeffrey played a central role in the celebrations. He chose and ordered his own socks from the Lots of Socks campaign site, adding a personal touch to the day and making sure he was at the heart of the occasion.

On the day itself, everyone joined in by wearing their own odd socks. Staff and housemates came together to celebrate, laugh and share in the moment. It was a simple idea, but one that brought a strong sense of togetherness and pride.

World Down Syndrome Day reminded us of something we hold at the core of what we do: every person is unique, and every moment matters. By celebrating Jeffrey, we celebrated individuality, inclusion and the importance of creating a home where everyone feels valued, understood and proud of who they are.
