Mencap's Learning Disability Week Challenge
This week, the people we support and our staff teams proudly took part in Mencap's Learning Disability Week, joining thousands of people across the country to raise awareness, challenge perceptions and celebrate the contributions of people with learning disabilities.
This year's theme, "Do You See Me?", focuses on ensuring that people with a learning disability are seen, heard, valued and included in all aspects of life. The campaign encourages people to look beyond labels and recognise each person's unique talents, ambitions and potential.
To mark the week, we entered Mencap's One Big Walk Challenge, which aims to raise awareness of the 1.5 million people in the UK who have a learning disability.
The challenge quickly became an exceptional competition between our two teams:
Cocklebury Farmhouse
Greenway Park & Malmesbury Road
Together, staff and residents achieved an incredible 973,377 steps between Monday and Friday. Whether taking part in a big walk or simply finding extra opportunities to get moving, everyone played their part.
The competition created plenty of teamwork but the real achievement was coming together to support a cause that matters deeply to us.
The competition was exceptional, but we are pleased to share that the winning team was….
Greenway Park and Malmesbury Road with a whopping 568,307 steps.
A huge well done to them!!
Cocklebury Farmhouse was a very close second with 405,070 steps.
Our upcoming Coffee and Crumbs afternoon will celebrate the amazing effort that the people we support and our staff took on, so we will celebrate with extra cake and continue to fundraise for the One Big Walk Challenge.
Learning Disability Week is an important opportunity to challenge stereotypes and remind society that people with learning disabilities should be recognised for their strengths, talents and contributions. At Cocklebury, we are proud to stand alongside Mencap in promoting a world where people with learning disabilities are truly seen, heard and valued.
A huge thank you goes to everyone who took part, supported activities, shared their stories and contributed to an incredible week of awareness, inclusion and celebration.
